The Power of Social Media and Community in Sustaining Black-Owned Businesses

If you have an Instagram account, a Facebook page, or have been on the new social networking platform, Clubhouse you will find at the tip of your fingertip’s pages, groups, and discussions on entrepreneurship and black-owned businesses.

Social media has been a useful tool when it comes to connecting business owners to customers, finding experts in a particular field, and connecting with creatives who share a common goal.

As I have been listening to some of the topics on these platforms and following individuals who align with my interest, I am intrigued by how many black and brown women are starting new businesses, leaving a legacy, and creating generational wealth.

Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cripple businesses, we can each play an important role in supporting our communities of color and black-owned businesses.

Why?

Because when we support the black-owned salon, the black-owned beauty supply store, or the black-owned restaurant our neighborhoods and communities thrive. You may or may not have a business of your own, but finding your next black-owned entity to support is only a click away.

How can you play a role in sustaining black-owned businesses?

❖ Write a review about the business on Yelp, Amazon, or the owner's website.

❖ Use social media to share their page and tell your friends about any upcoming events or sales.

❖ If a product does not necessarily interest you, donate what you can to the business.

❖ Sponsor a business to be featured in the local newsletter or online platform.

❖ Create positive affirmations not just for your business, but for the businesses in your community.

❖ Send a thank you card to show how much you appreciate and value their business.

❖ Let go of the competition and ego. If your sister has a nail salon down the block and her business is fruitful, find out how you can collaborate by sharing ideas to sustain both businesses.

❖ Do a business warming party, to celebrate an opening or an accomplishment.

Let us work collaboratively to make our communities of color a powerhouse by creating wealth in our communities, our families, and our own lives.

Use the power of social media and your black and brown communities to not just sustain businesses through the pandemic but to create long-term prosperity and wealth.
