The Importance of Vitamin D for Our Melanin
So by now the COVID-19 cases are still very much on the rise, and not showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. Many of us are continuing to shelter-in-place or limiting time outside to remain safe. Many people are still out of work, and thus the struggle is really real out here. This is weighing heavily on families just trying to survive, and finding balance has become overwhelmingly cumbersome for many.
With the obvious at hand, this could potentially pose issues with vitamin deficiencies, especially for people of color. Vitamin D in particular is an essential part of maintaining good health within the African American communities. If you so happen to be lacking Vitamin D, then the following symptoms may set in: muscle weakness, bone pain, mood swings, fatigue, and depression. Stress will definitely lead to even more problems that can be avoided.
So how can we stay on track in keeping up with proper vitamin intake for the best self-care? We can certainly do the simplest of things by:
a) Incorporating vitamin rich foods and/or supplements into your diet. Some Vitamin D rich foods would include: fatty fish and seafood, mushrooms, and egg yolks.
b) Getting outside more to absorb natural sunlight and breathing in fresh air - all at a safe distance of course.
c) If you are not a fan of the outdoors, then open those windows and blinds to let the sun shine in.
We have so much to deal with already nowadays, and doing our absolute best to stay healthy is highly suggested to keep us better equipped on how to cope with things. It is easier said than done to stay the course, but we all can manage these things with continued encouragement and friendly reminders.
