Can We Just Have Our Moment?

Where should I begin? Well for starters: Congratulations goes out to our Vice President elect Senator Kamala Harris, and a highly-deserved honor for her and the culture. Now onto something I’m curious to know: Are there any women who are not of color that ever think about what it’s like to be a woman of color? To not have any sense of entitlement, or to have her crown of hair be up for debate in corporate America?

Women of color, Black Women in particular, especially in a position of authority are unfairly scrutinized just for existing. Our strength, confidence, and tenacity seem to be an unexplainable threat. To me this is so very perplexing and mind-boggling, to say the least. Our presence on this earth exhibits such a vast variety in the very essence of love, care, nurturing, intelligence, and a rich blend of colorful innovations. Examples of such creativity are portrayed in our hair, make-up, fashion, music, food and politics, along with numerous other attributes.

It would be satisfying to receive the overdue recognition for the countless number of things we contribute to and in this world. We have made such a huge impact in many facets, and it hurts to not be fully accepted or respected for who we are. This perpetuates feelings of never being able to measure up, and negatively impacts one’s self-esteem.

On a final note: I applaud anyone who is an ally in this fight, and that speaks great volumes. To anyone that has ever taken an opportunity away from a Black Woman to shine: We just want our moment to represent and be represented without the spotlight being turned down and redirected elsewhere. Society: when will you let us finally arrive to stay for good?
